We have been testing the cheapest Fitbit fitness bracelet, the Fitbit Flex 2, for a month and the truth is that it has exceeded our expectations and only has a few “buts”. Let’s see how it has behaved in our review. We already anticipated that it is the perfect low-cost fitness bracelet for swimming.
Fitbit Flex 2: the cheapest Fitbit fitness bracelet perfect for swimming
- Track steps, distances, calories burned, and minutes of activity
- Removable ultra-thin monitor that is concealed by bracelets, bangles or pendants
- Silent alarms
- Call and message notifications
- Recognizes different sports: cycling, fitness, gym session, swimming, walking, running or any sport in general
- Water resistant to 50 meters: Monitor when you swim
- SmartTrack automatically recognizes certain exercises (running outdoors or on the treadmill, bike rides, sports and aerobics) and records them in your Fitbit app
- With two bracelets included
- App for iOS and Android
The first thing you have to keep in mind is that this bracelet is designed for very specific people with specific needs. What does that mean? It does not have GPS or heart rate control, but nevertheless, it can perfectly control many sports, including swimming, and it gives you access to the Fitbit ecosystem at a very low price.
Fitbit Flex 2 vs Xiaomi Mi Band 2
Until I started using this bracelet, I was using the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 . It was the cheapest option and has pulsation control. Is it really the cheapest? Okay. If we take into account only the price, yes. If we take into account that the bracelet will last between 6 months and a year … no. The Fitbit model gives you two bracelets of different sizes that you can use without much problem, and it is infinitely more resistant. The Fitbit Flex 2 costs twice as much as the Xiaomi bracelet, but it offers you much more, including a great app.
Without a doubt, the strong point of this fitness bracelet is that you can always carry it with you, even when you are in the pool swimming or on the beach: it can be submerged up to 50 meters.
The Fitbit Flex 2 is capable of automatically measuring a large multitude of sports without having to activate anything at all, and in the case of swimming, if you want more precise data, you only need to enter the length of the pool and maintain a rhythm constant without taking breaks beyond 60 seconds. It is quite accurate. I usually do 40 pitches, and I’ve always scored between 39-40 pitches.
What must be done so that the bracelet recognizes the sports activity you are doing? Just keep active for 15 minutes or more (it can be changed), be it cycling, fitness, a gym session, swimming, walking, running or any sport in general (there is a category that encompasses them all).
- The Fitbit Flex 2 also recognizes steps, monitors sleep etc … And controls the calories you take and spend, weight and food (if you enter the data).
Fitbit Flex 2: Design
It is quite similar to the 2013 model, but in this case we have 5 LEDs that inform us of a multitude of states (daily progress, alarms etc). It does not have a screen. The small pill is tucked into a rubber strap (two come) and held firmly inside. It is available in several colors and you also have some accessories such as a gold bracelet or a pendant (they are somewhat expensive, about 80 euros).
The bracelet is very comfortable to wear and you don’t feel like you are wearing them. The double closure is really safe and does not look like it will come loose.
Fitbit Flex 2: Performance
The Fitbit app is really good, especially when compared to Xiaomi’s. It syncs automatically. The main screen shows you all the data you need:
- Steps, kilometers traveled, calories expended or minutes of daily activity
- Weekly exercise control
- Hours you sleep
- Activity notifications by hours
- Weight control
- Calories ingested (if you enter the data of your meals)
- Water that you have drunk
The activity control is very good and quite reliable. Sleep control is not bad at all, although sometimes it is somewhat imprecise in this model.
What is interesting in the app is the control you can take of your meals and the calories you eat. They have a very good database for Spain, and you can even scan food barcodes to put what you eat into the app faster.
The adventure section is interesting, but it seems geared toward the American audience.
I have also tried FitStar (training app that you can download separately), and the truth is that I have subscribed to their annual plan. The exercises are very complete and are automatically recorded in your daily activity. Subscription costs less than 40 euros per year. Maybe they should include more free exercises (you have two days a week of free exercises in your plan).
The battery lasts about 5 days, which is not bad at all.
Fitbit Flex 2: Conclusion
The Fitbit Flex 2 is an excellent fitness bracelet that allows you to control a sport like swimming for less than 60 euros. If you are looking for GPS or pulse monitoring, this is not your bracelet.
If you are looking for a fitness bracelet with an interactive trainer or a longer battery life, the Moov Now is the best option. And if you are not a swimmer, the Jawbone UP3 or the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 offers you pulse control.
That said, the Fitbit Flex 2 has one of the best apps on the market and allows you to keep a very complete control of your sports life and daily activity. If you are a swimmer, it is one of the best options.
- Two bracelets included
- Submersible to 50 meters and swimming control
- Exceptional application
- Very easy to use
- Does not have GPS or pulse monitoring
